Hiatal hernia causing extrapericardial tamponade after coronary bypass surgery.
Cardiac tamponade is defined as compression of the heart due to accumulation of fluid in the pericardial sac, leading to raised pericardial pressures with haemodynamic compromise. We describe the case of a 76-year old female patient who underwent a routine off-pump coronary artery bypass graft operation and within 48 h developed classic signs of cardiac tamponade. The perioperative echocardiogr...
متن کاملHiatal Hernia Is Associated With an Increased Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation in Young Patients.
Purpose: Hiatal hernia (HH) causes protrusion of the stomach into the chest cavity, directly impinging on the left atrium and possibly increasing predisposition to atrial arrhythmogenesis. However, such association has not been fully explored. The objective was to determine if an association between HH and atrial fibrillation (AF) exists and whether there are age- and sex-related differences. M...

متن کاملHiatal Hernia as a Mysterious Diagnosis; a Case Report
Introduction: Proximal displacement of stomach and gastro-esophageal junction into the thoracic cavity results in a condition known as hiatal hernia (HH). Sometimes this entity is neglected in practice and the patient is handled as gastroesophageal reflux disease, asthma or other non-surgical diagnosis.Case: Here we present a 6 months-old female infant who present with bloody emesis since two m...
متن کاملHiatal hernia in achalasia.
Barium esophagograms of 89 patients out of 110 with manometrically proven achalasia were reviewed. Only four (4.4%) patients showed association of hiatal hernia, indicative of its rare occurrence. Presence of hiatal hernia, is said to have less likelihood of associated achalasia but this association does exist as per our report and that of others.
